EPM Lab – Planning Cube Limitation

If you are using a Planning application, you may need to use additional custom cubes to meet the specific business requirements. However, the number of cubes for a planning application has limitations. Let’s dig into the details in this post.

 

The Planning application comes with two SKUs, the New EPM Planning and the Legacy PBCS/EPBCS.

1.New EPM Planning (the new SKU)

Planning Application has two types of versions: (the new SKU)

  • EPM Standard Cloud Service
  • EPM Enterprise Cloud Service

1.1 EPM Standard Cloud Service

OOTB

The Standard planning application is using the out of the box modules/frameworks. The OOTB module cubes are:

  • 5 BSO
  • 1 ASO

Additional Custom Cubes

The additional custom cubes are:

  • 1 BSO — Hybrid or non-Hybrid
  • 1 ASO

1.2 EPM Enterprise Cloud Service

The Enterprise planning is slightly complex. When creating a planning application, we are able to select one of the following application types.

  • Module application
  • Custom application
  • FreeForm application

1.2.1 Module application

OOTB

Similar to the  Standard planning application, for the module based Enterprise application, the OOTB module cubes are:

  • 5 BSO
  • 1 ASO

Additional Custom Cubes

The additional custom cubes are:

  • 3 BSO — Hybrid or non-Hybrid
  • 4 ASO

1.2.2 Custom Application

The custom type application does not come with any OOTB modules. It supports the additional custom cubes are:

  • 6 BSO — Hybrid or non-Hybrid
  • 6 ASO

1.2.3 FreeForm Application

The FreeForm planning application can only have one cube. It has no dimension requirements.

  • 1 BSO — Hybrid or non-Hybrid
  • OR 1 ASO

2.Legacy PBCS/EPBCS (the legacy SKU)

The Legacy planning comes with PBCS and EPBCS.

2.1 Enterprise Planning and Budgeting Cloud (EPBCS)

OOTB

The EPBCS application is using the out of the box modules/frameworks. The OOTB module cubes are:

  • 5 BSO
  • 1 ASO

Additional Custom Cubes

The additional custom cubes are:

  • 3 BSO — Hybrid or non-Hybrid
  • 4 ASO

2.2 Planning and Budgeting Cloud (PBCS)

The PBCS application does not come with any OOTB modules. It supports the additional custom cubes are:

  • 3 BSO — Hybrid or non-Hybrid
  • 4 ASO

 

Please note:

Any planning applications cannot use a mix of Hybrid BSO and non-Hybrid BSO. If you pick Hybrid, then all BSO cubes will be Hybrid.
