I remember when I started my career in EPM/Hyperion, I started on Hyperion Planning and Essbase. On-premises version, I’ve been using Hyperion Essbase Administration Services (EAS) to manage Essbase. I really like this tool. I remember the days that my mentor taught me how to use EAS to load data, how to update hierarchy, how to manage Essbase index file (.ind, .inn), outline file (.otl), Database data/page file (.pag, .pan), rule file (.rul), MaxL script file (.mxl), etc. It was great days for me.
Back to February 2014, when Oracle first release PBCS, there wasn’t any tool, like EAS that we could manage Essbase directly in cloud. Since I am more focusing on PBCS / EPBCS, I look forward to having a cloud version of Essbase. Fortunately, during Oracle Open World 2015, Oracle presented a demo for Essbase Cloud Service (EssCS). I was really excited about that. The demo showed that the EAS and Essbase Studio will not be available in the cloud. The EssCS will be a Java based architecture, and it will be platform as a Service that allows us built our own applications.
One year later, during Oracle Open World 2016, Oracle had another demo for the EssCS, and we been told that it will be released some point in 2017. I feel the day of getting the EssCS is very soon. You can go to Oracle Essbase Cloud Service website to check the latest news.
The following are part of the key updates for EssCS:
- EssCS will be offering Essbase and Data Visualization (DV).
- Smartview and BICS access
- Manage metadata in Excel
- Clouse based UI
- Semi-managed, no access to the server level
- Subscription Pay based on CPU, Memory, and time
On top of those, there will be two new tools coming up with EssCS, Cube Designer and Essbase Command Line Interface (EssCLI).
Cube Designer
- Excel add-in
- Export cubes to Excel format
- Use Excel as a modeling tool to describe and change the model
EssClI
- Execute jobs such as calcs, clears, data load and dim builds
- Upload files to the cloud service
- Check job statuses
- LCM Import
Hopefully, we can get more info on EssCS in the near future.
