March 17th, 2017, Oracle finally released Essbase Cloud Service (EssCS). EssCS is part of Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC). I do remember the first time I heard of EssCS that was during Oracle Open World 2015. After such a long time waiting, EssCS is finally here. It is a very exciting moment!
Oracle Analytics Cloud
If you are coming from the on-premises Hyperion world, you may not very familiar about Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC). It is a bundled product suite, a comprehensive analytics platform that powers your analytics strategy at any scale, in every environment – cloud, premises, desktop, and data center. OAC provides everything you need to ask any question of any data, on any device, at any time – so you can get the value you expect from analytics.
Currently, OAC includes the following services:
- Oracle Data Visualization Cloud Service (DVCS)
- Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service (BICS)
- Oracle Essbase
- Oracle Smartview
Essbase Cloud Service is a new service. Other services have been already released for a while.
Oracle Analytics Cloud has the following properties:
- Standard version and Enterprise version, Enterprise version has cross environment partitions and drill-through
- Offered as a Platform as a Service (PaaS)
- Unlimited applications and users
- User admin controls updates and backups
- Subscription based
- Users can choose how many CPUs they want
- Increase or decrease capacity on the fly
Essbase Cloud Service
EssCS is not just the cloud version of the on-premises Essbase. There is no Essbase Administration Services (EAS) coming with EssCS. The administration process will be managed in the web interface and in the new excel add-in, Cube Designer.

Excel add-in – Cube Designer:
Essbase Cloud Service has the following properties:
- Based on Essbase 12c
- Supports ASO, BSO, and fully functional advanced analytic Engine (Hybrid) cubes
- New LCM utility for migrating on-premises cubes to the cloud
- Ability to create lightweight sandboxes, which only store changes, can run calculations against them
- RESTful APIs are available for process automation
In general, the EssCS is in its early days. I am a huge fan of this service and I believe there will be more enhancement functions added into EssCS in the near future. The future for EPM and database belong to Cloud. Essbase Cloud Service is the future. I will publish more detail functions about EssCS in the future blogs.
